As mentioned in the blog article A City of Gates and Walls, the city of St. Gallen was once surrounded by a massive wall and several gates. Here I’d like to show you some of these historic gates, depicted in copper engravings I inherited. The Images were createt by the copper engraver Werner Kuster. Today, only one gates is left – the Karlstor and a small part of the original wall remind us of this fortified past.
The city of St. Gallen was protected by a city wall. There were several gates and towers. The city fortifications were largely demolished by 1879. The Karlstor, with a remnant of the city wall, the Round Tower and a section of the dividing wall between the city and the monastery district have been preserved.
