Areal Bach is a playground for urban nature, culture and connection – and that’s exactly what makes it so special for travellers who want to experience St. Gallen beyond the postcard sights. Here, nature, creativity and community blend into an experience that lingers. It’s not loud, not flashy – but honest, local, and surprisingly full of life.
Once a desolate 10,000-square-metre parking lot, the area has blossomed into a temporary urban oasis. Today, it’s home to wildflower meadows, freshly planted trees and natural habitats for birds, insects and small wildlife. The air smells of soil and herbs, and at every corner you’ll discover carefully designed details – from benches made of recycled materials to urban gardens and info panels that spark curiosity about what’s growing here. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes especially magical: fairy lights glow, DJ sets or acoustic concerts play, and conversations flow easily between locals and visitors.
Events
But Areal Bach is more than just an island of greenery – it’s also a social hub. The association behind the project actively encourages the involvement of the neighbourhood. Every now and then, you’ll stumble upon a small concert, a flea market, a community gardening session or an open discussion round. It’s these spontaneous gatherings that give the place its pulse.
Gustav Gleis
At the heart of the site is Gustav Gleis – a casual and welcoming eatery where fresh, seasonal food is served with heart. Many ingredients come straight from the neighbourhood or even the community garden next door. Whether it’s homemade cake, herbal lemonade, summer ice cream or a warming raclette in winter, Gustav Gleis is a place for everyone who appreciates good food in a relaxed setting.
Getting there is easy: From the main station, it only takes a few minutes by bus to reach St. Fiden, or you can take a leisurely walk across the footbridge straight to the site. Travelling with a camper van? You’re in for a pleasant surprise: there are official spots where you can stay overnight, surrounded by greenery. A rare chance to sleep in the middle of the city – accompanied by the sound of crickets and the glow of the setting sun.
