The Goliathgasse is one of the oldest streets in St.Gallen’s Old Town and once served as an important connection between the marketplace and the roads leading out of the city. Its unique shape was influenced by the hillside of St.Mangen and the former St.Katharinen convent. Long ago, the Irabach stream even flowed through the narrow street.
Between 1897 and 1950, a tram line ran directly through the steep alley towards Heiligkreuz — something hard to imagine today. Historic Gothic houses, old city walls and buildings from the 19th century still shape the atmosphere of the street.
Today, Goliathgasse is better known for its flea market, bars and second-hand shops. During the redesign of the street in 2016, a small golden stone with the words “Goliath Gasse 2016” was placed in the ground. It is not a historic monument, but simply a subtle reminder of the renovation and the long history of this special street.
